{"id":2992,"date":"2021-06-08T14:57:51","date_gmt":"2021-06-08T14:57:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eurovolc.eu\/?p=2992"},"modified":"2021-06-09T08:30:23","modified_gmt":"2021-06-09T08:30:23","slug":"2992","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/project.eurovolc.eu\/?p=2992","title":{"rendered":"The eruption still going strong."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The eruption in Reykjanes has gone on for 82 days, during which time scientist have had the opportunity to study and enjoy its progress and developments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1744\" height=\"862\" src=\"https:\/\/eurovolc.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Eldgosamynd-Fagradalsfjall2-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2999\"\/><figcaption>Screenshot from www.mbl.is live camera.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The event has not only brought a research opportunities for geoscientists.<br>On the 13<sup>th<\/sup> of May, workers in collaboration with Civil Protection and Verk\u00eds Consulting Engineers started building two 8 m high barriers in Sy\u00f0ri Merardalur with the aim to slow down the progress of the lava and to protect infrastructures such as the Su\u00f0urstrandavegur road, at least for some time. The barriers were built from close-by material and took only a few days to complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"948\" height=\"425\" src=\"https:\/\/eurovolc.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screenshot-RUV-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3000\"\/><figcaption>Screenshot from www.ruv.is showing constructors raising a barrier at the lava front.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The progressing lava however found its way past the eastern barrier on the 22<sup>nd<\/sup> of May and it managed to flow over the western barrier on June 5<sup>th<\/sup>. Lava now flows into the valley of N\u00e1tthagi and towards the south coast. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1640\" height=\"1230\" src=\"https:\/\/eurovolc.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/1276277hraun-natthagi.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3001\"\/><figcaption>Lava has now reached N\u00e1tthagi valley. Image: Elvar \u00d3lafsson\/mbl.is<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the beginning of the event, lava has erupted from six vents, most of which were short-lived and the activity is now in one vent which has produced lava fountains and erupts with episodic activity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"590\" height=\"678\" src=\"https:\/\/eurovolc.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/thumbnail_IMG_4187fagradalsfjallsgos_KSV-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3011\"\/><figcaption>Spectacular lava fountains at Fagradalsfjall.
